Acupuncture & Fertility

“Can acupuncture really support my fertility and how does it work?”

I get this question quite a bit. I get it. It seems so improbable that super small needles could have such a profound effect.

Most people have heard about people for pain- but there is a growing amount of people also using acupuncture for fertility support. And I am so jazzed about that! So, how can it support fertility and why? Let’s look to the current research and some of my own clinical experiences treating fertility.

I have seen ACUPUNCTURE regulate OVULATion

Some of the patients I treat are not able to get pregnant because they are not ovulating. This can be from metabolic disorders, thyroid disorders, PCOS, cysts, or chronic stress. A western medical workup and hormonal testing does wonders to support the “why” here, but often I find that once the why is ascertained, it can be difficult to still regulate ovulation. Acupuncture could be a great support here. I have seen people with 52-64, 85 day cycles regulate and have regular and consistent cycles. There is plenty of research out there about acupuncture supporting ovulation, like this article.

ACUPUNCTURE CAN REGULATE REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES

The hypothalamic pituitary axis (or the HPA) has been shown to be positively influenced by acupuncture. This axis is the really the epicenter for hormones in the body. Hormone signals are released in the brain, and the rest of the body responds accordingly. With anovulation (no ovulating), there are signs that there is some confusion in brain chemistry. This research study demonstrated that acupuncture can support ovulation, but also influence genetic expressions and help the brain to regularly and correctly secrete hormones. From my own clinical experience, I have seen cycles regulate, less PMS, PMDD, anxiety, depression, stress and sadness. All of these are components of hormonal support.

I HAVE SEEN ACUPUNCTURE SUPPORT STRESS, WHICH CAN SUPPORT FERTILITY

Fertility can be a stressful thing to work with. There is a ton of pressure, confusion, and often questioning what is going on. This can be incredibly stress inducing. Acupuncture has been shown both in research, found here, and in my own practice to support instances of stress.
