Motivation and the winter
Anyone else feeling low motivation lately?
I definitely have been. These chilly mornings have not made me the most bright eyed and bushy tailed if you know what I mean. Instead of heading to the gym or out for a walk, I have been opting to sleep in a bit or start the morning slowly with reading.
But, damn. That can come with some serious guilt tripping and a lot of "I should" statements.
So, how have I been trying to reframe this? With Chinese Medicine knowledge of course!
The time of winter is deep yin state. We are at about day 47 of January it feels and the winter slog is real.
First, I try to remember that this time of year is all about rest and replenishment. The trees are dormant, the seeds are waiting, the birds have become quieter.
Second, I remember that the kidneys govern this time of year. And one of the fundamental essences of the Kidneys is what we call Zhi. This can be somewhat translated to drive, will power, or motivation. Replenishing the kidneys zhi is essential in this time so that when spring comes we are ready to spring forward too.
But, with all things in Chinese Medicine, there is a balance. So, I have been trying to do some gentle movement techniques as well. Small stretches, yoga videos, and eating more warm foods like soups and stews (pot roast anyone?). And cutting the crap of guilt tripping myself.
Let's welcome in gentleness and kindness to ourselves this winter season. I'll see you on the acupuncture table.
