Pediatric Acupuncture

Have you ever wondered about acupuncture for kids?

If you ever considered acupuncture for your kids, you would not be alone! Pediatric acupuncture is a wide and vast space with a ton of amazing practitioners paving the way in this medicine. Pediatric issues and diseases have shot up in the last couple of decades, often leaving caregivers confused and at a loss. No one wants to be there, especially when your child is suffering.

Here is the rub: Acupuncture can be incredibly beneficial for kids. I have treated a children of all ages in my acupuncture practice and it is so rewarding. While some adults and parents may think that acupuncture for kids would be really scary and most kids wouldn’t want to do it, most of my kid patients don’t agree! They often think it is really cool. I was even told once that acupuncture is pretty fancy (a small feather in my cap).

There are some things to know though. Pediatric acupuncture can be a little bit different from a traditional adult treatment.

How Pediatric Acupuncture is different from Adult Acupuncture:

  • We typically use fewer needles during the treatment

  • We typically use very fine and thin needles to prevent pain

  • We use other "needleless" tools and techniques with the same amount of efficacy (like something called shonishin, acupressure)

  • We use a shorter needle retention time and shorter treatment time (kids move a lot and being still can be hard!)

  • We focus a lot on nutrition and dietary advice

  • Less treatments may be needed. Kids have a ton of energy and their issues are usually not as deep rooted, so it can take less time to address.

Here are some ways in which it Pediatric Acupuncture does not differ from Adult Acupuncture:

  • It helps with a variety of health concerns! Both adult and pediatric acupuncture are incredibly beneficial

  • It is painless and it is relaxing - some kids fall asleep or want to know more about the medicine!

  • It is still patient focused- kids need support too!

  • It creates the ability for the patient to be heard - kids are so honest!

But what if my child is afraid of needles?

    I hear you.

I like to remind people that we don’t have to use needles during the treatment at all! There are amazing tools out there that achieve the same desired affect and don’t require putting your child in a space that they don’t want to be in! Needles can be scary, even for adults. Some of my adult patients don’t even receive needles, we just use these needleless tools and they still have great efficacy!

I always remind myself, kids are getting a ton of vaccinations, so they often associate needles with a lot of pain. That is not my goal here. My goal is for them to relax and feel better.
